Lois McMaster Bujold (SF/F) no longer does pre-orders for her Penric novel/las any more, for similar reasons. These are primarily eformat, and it may be only Subterranean Press who publishes the physical copies.
Instead of actually replacing the actual keyboard on the laptop, you could just buy a keyboard and plug it into your laptop via USB. I've had to do that before. I've seen them at the Dollarama too.
